A Digital Lab — From Business Plans to White-Hat Hacking

The situation

Transmutace offered companies services that don’t obviously belong together: digital marketing, websites, security testing and agile management training. My job was to run that lab.

What it involved

Marketing and websites were familiar ground. Everything around them was not.

Business plans and budgets. Writing down what something will cost and what it will return is a different discipline from estimating how long a page takes to build. It forces you to think about work in numbers that still have to hold up a year later.

White-hat hacking for companies. Security testing with the client’s consent — finding the way in, then writing it up so someone non-technical can act on it. That experience permanently changed how I write code. Once you have seen how quickly a badly written form falls over, you stop writing them badly.

Agile management training. Explaining sprints, backlogs and retrospectives to people who had run projects by email and spreadsheet. The hard part was never the methodology; it was convincing management that a plan which changes halfway through is not a sign of chaos.

What I took from it

The security work was the most useful part. A developer who knows how attacks work writes different code — validating input because they have seen what happens when it isn’t validated. That isn’t caution from a textbook; it’s experience.

If you have read this far, you are probably the kind of person who reads things carefully. Those are the people I work with best.
